Well, the only good thing that has come out of this anxiety, is that I have been walking almost six miles every morning. At least, it reduces the beating in my heart.
This morning, around 2:30 a.m., I was as usual surfing the internet, when I came across this story in the New York Times, that said, “Obama is Up, and Fans Fear That Jinxes it.” If I weren’t doing exactly the same thing that the Times was describing that others were doing, it would have been quite hilarious. But it is not hilarious at all. Actually, this article was written on Friday, the 31st, but as I said I just saw it last night. So, I feel like I am not alone.
Wrote Michael Powell of the Times, “In the den of his home in New Hope, Pa., a liberal Democrat sits tap-tapping at his computer. “I have this sense of impending doom.” “I’m optimistic, but I can’t look at the polls.”
Jon Downs works the electoral vote maps on Yahoo like a spiritualist shaking his Ouija board. He calibrates and recalibrates: Give Senator John McCain Ohio, Missouri, even Florida. But Virginia and Pennsylvania, those go to Senator Barack Obama. And Vermont, Democrats can count on Vermont, right?
Right.
Almost always, Mr. Downs, 53, ends with Mr. Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, ahead, which should please this confirmed liberal and profound Obama fan. But just as often he feels worried.” His reason, ““Look, I have this sense of impending doom; we’ve had a couple of elections stolen already,” Mr. Downs said. “The only thing worse than losing is to think that you’re going to win and then lose.”
Mr. Downs is, of course, not alone. In my own case, I know that my high-blood pressure is up. I spend so much time surfing the internet, that I know practically everything that is happening where. Of course, the sites I visit are basically “progressive” sites, huffingtonpost, talkingpointsmemo, dailykos, politico, mydd, in that order. Some times I go to andrewsullivan. For a long time, after reading from Chris Cilizza of the Washington Post about how important the Drudge Report was to reporters, I started going there. I was beginning to wonder what all the hoopla was about, since I found the site to be totally biased against Democrats. It is like the 24-hour bashing on the Fox News.
It’s even gotten to the point where people are going to their psychotherapists. The article says “Ask Lucy Slurzberg, an Upper West Side psychotherapist, how many of her liberal patients speak of their electoral fears during their sessions, and she answers: “Oh, only about 90 percent of them.”
My tv is programmed to record “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” at 9:00 pm. I need reinforcement for my beliefs, I don’t like too much heart palpitations - I have no doubt that watching Fox News will increase my bp, except of course on Sundays when they show one of the NFL games, or when they show the program ‘24’. Other than that, I have nothing at all with Fox News. I find Hannity, O’Reilly and Ingraham dishonorable in how they present the news.
Even this evening, there are new poll numbers, which give Obama a commanding lead. But would this stop my anxiety, absolutely not.
Well, the only good thing that has come out of this anxiety, is that I have been walking almost six miles every morning. At least, it reduces the beating in my heart.
